The Department of Health Sciences in the College of Health Professions and Sciences at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-earning faculty position at the rank of assistant professor. The expected start date is Fall 2022 or Spring 2023.

Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following disciplines are encouraged to apply: pathophysiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, human nutrition, health behavior or clinical applications of preventive health. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a productive line of research; publish in highly-ranked, peer-reviewed journals in their discipline; pursue and secure external funding to support their research program; teach undergraduate and future graduate courses; mentor students in research; participate in internal and external professional service activities; and demonstrate collegiality in all aspects of faculty engagement. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

The Department of Health Sciences is the second largest department at UCF with ~3900 undergraduate students in the major and about 500 students in the minor. The Department of Health Sciences is housed within the College of Health Professions and Sciences at UCF. The college is a core member of the relatively new UCF Academic Health Sciences Center (AHSC) along with the existing Colleges of Nursing and Medicine. CHPS hosts four academic units, the Department of Health Sciences, the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the School of Kinesiology & Physical Therapy, and the School of Social Work.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate, Ph.D. or equivalent, in a health sciences-related discipline from an accredited academic institution of higher education is required by the start of the appointment. Evidence of teaching experience in subjects within the core health sciences curriculum at UCF (i.e., pathophysiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, nutrition, research methods, health behavior, clinical applications of preventive health or other courses related to the department’s core curriculum), a record of scholarly research, peer-reviewed publications, and other scholarly activities are also required.


Candidates who demonstrate or show clear potential for developing a viable, focused research program with a high probability of securing extramural funding and forming strong collaborations within and/or external to the department will be given preference. Other preferences include experience teaching academic courses to undergraduate/graduate students as the instructor of record in an academic program at an institution of higher education; evidence of effectiveness of teaching and instructional innovation in a large and diverse academic program within a university setting; and evidence of effective student mentoring, including mentoring teaching assistants and undergraduate/graduate student theses.

Applicants at the associate professor level will need to demonstrate success as an independent researcher with extramural funding, a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications, and recognizable impact of their research including citations and other relevant indicators of success. To be eligible for appointment as a tenured associate professor upon hire, the successful candidate must have a distinguished record of scholarly achievement and teaching experience commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor.
