About the opportunity

With a history dating back to 1882, the Faculty of Science is among five faculties and three University schools at the University of Sydney and conducts teaching and research across eight distinct Schools: Chemistry; Geosciences; History and Philosophy of Science; Life and Environmental Sciences; Mathematics and Statistics; Physics; Psychology; and the Sydney School of Veterinary Science.

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences is ranked 2nd in Australia and 19th globally for life sciences (QS Rankings by Subject 2022). Academics in the school apply novel interdisciplinary approaches to address key global challenges including climate change, sustainability, food security and health.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic as the next Boden Chair in Human Nutrition. This position will lead the development and expansion of scientific research and education focused on human nutrition and will form productive interfaces with relevant translational science. Academics in SOLES are active in research and teaching related to food and nutrition science that includes nutritional ecology, agriculture, food science, evolutionary biology, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling. There are close links with academics and clinicians in other faculties, notably through the Charles Perkins Centre (CPC), with expertise in human nutritional physiology, eating disorders, clinical trials, public health nutrition, maternal and child nutrition, and nutrition policy.

The successful candidate will have a track record that clearly demonstrates their ability to lead and develop the field of human nutrition science at the University of Sydney through excellence in research, teaching and external engagement. The successful applicant must have a wide network of established relationships with key academic and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the School, the CPC, the Faculty and the University.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

The successful candidate will hold a PhD, or equivalent, in an area of human nutrition-related research and be a recognised international academic leader in human nutrition science. They will have, and maintain, a distinguished record of scholarship, research, publications, research funding and education in human nutrition science. They will take an active role in nutrition-related undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and in the development of cross-disciplinary educational programs and in the promotion of innovation in curriculum design and teaching methods. They will build strong strategic alliances and research collaborations in human nutrition-related research for the University of Sydney, SOLES and CPC and cultivate an environment for successful collaboration, exchange of ideas and synergy among School members across relevant disciplines. They will foster excellence in scholarship, in promoting research and research policy and in encouraging and developing research training. They will build and lead a successful research team and obtain substantial funding to support a research program in basic science related to human nutrition. They will be willing to contribute to scholarly and collegial life as well as governance in the School, CPC and University and provide leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and in training of research students and early and mid­career researchers. They should have a strong track record of successful collaboration (nationally and internationally) across disciplines and sectors. They will have excellent communication skills, both oral and written and a clear understanding of all relevant work health and safety, ethics and other regulatory obligations. 

Term and remuneration

The term of the appointment as Chair is five years with the possibility of renewal, subject to negotiation. The successful candidate will also be offered a professorial appointment in an appropriate discipline in the school and will retain that position at the conclusion of their term as Chair

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
